Hartz Canaries

The Hartz Canary is descended from the Hartz Mountain Roller canary. These birds were orginally developed in Germany and imported into the USA in great numbers during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, the term "German Roller" refers to the modern song breed that has been refined in Germany and is popular in the USA as well as world-wide. In the USA, "Hartz" refers to the type breed descended from these early imports.

The typical body of the Hartz canary is 4 3/4" to 5 1/4" long. The body is slightly rounded with a racy, slim look.

The Hartz canary can be found in  either a "plainhead" or a "Topknot" (crested). We specialize in white and yellow ground in hartz canaries. Below are examples of some of the colors we raise.
